I doubt that you need any more testimonials for your amazing deodorant stick, but I have been so delighted with a product that lives up to its claims, I felt I should write about it. I thought I would put the product to test and have travelled to Africa and the Near East experiencing temperatures up to 40 degrees C in the last year with no trace of BO. Both my wife and I lead very active lives and we now would use nothing else. My worry is that as the stick lasts so long (in my case 12 months with probably two months to go) that it is not commercially viable! Hi, I simply want to tell you how amazing your product is, I have been using it now for about 5 years, and now refuse to use any other kind of deodorant. I suffer from psoriasis, and used to get it very bad under my armpits; I tried every kind of deodorant going, and absolutely nothing worked, only always made the matter worse, until I found your product. After the first use I could tell straight away that it was different, and after a week of using it my psoriasis under my arms had completely gone, and within that area I have had no trace of it ever coming back. Great product, I'm a very active person, sports etc. It really does stop any odour. You still sweat, but the moisture that this generates against your clothes etc does not turn into that 'bad BO' smell. It's not a problems that it does'nt have a perfum etc. A natural product that, having used for a week now I'm very impressed with. The main active ingredient in our crystal deodorants is Potassium alum, which is naturally mined in China.This naturally occurring mineral salt has been used as a natural deodorant for thousands of years. It has also been used in Traditional Indian and Chinese medicine and for water purification as it has natural antibacterial effects. We also use purified water and Honeysuckle Extract in our Spray and Travel Spray deodorants. Honeysuckle has antibacterial properties which help increase the natural deodorant effect. For More information on Honeysuckle please click here. Alum is mined from the ground. To shape these fragmented crystals the alum is dissolved in a small amount of boiling water and poured into a mould. It is then left to harden, and once solid it is polished to make sure it has no sharp edges. Once cooled and polished it is fixed into a recyclable plastic holder to be used as a crystal deodorant.
Our Classic and Travel deodorant stones are made from solid alum crystal whereas the spray is a combination of alum, water and honeysuckle. Both the classic natural deodorant and spray deodorant are equally as effective as each other, so the choice really comes down to your preferred format. Some people prefer to use what is effectively a rock deodorant whilst others like the convenience of a spray.
This very much depends on frequency of use and how much care is taken to look after the deodorant stone. The list below is what we believe to be an average life time.

Many people worry now about their children sweating and having body odour, sometimes even before puberty. They don’t want them spraying dubious chemicals around themselves at a young and formative age, but children are very sensitive to teasing and body problems, so something has to be done. Our unscented crystal deodorants are an excellent choice of deodorant for kids over the age of 5 years, because they do not contain alcohol, fragrance, parfums, aluminium chlorohydrate, parabens or additives and potassium alum is not harmful on the skin or absorbed into the skin.
Yes it is! It seems like a long time ago but in its past life our Salt of the Earth Classic was in fact called the Crystal Spring Natural Body Deodorant. In 2008 the packaging was changed as part of a rebrand Crystal Spring did in conjunction with the UK design council.
The human body has an ideal temperature range and has a number of systems to try and prevent it becoming overheated or becoming too cold. Sweating is a process used by the body to keep itself from overheating. Once the body reaches a certain temperature sweat is excreted through the skin. The process of sweating reduces the core body temperature while the evaporation of the sweat on the skin helps to reduce the skins surface temperature.
Antiperspirants and deodorants have a key difference. Antiperspirants reduce or stop the body from sweating while deodorants focus on stopping the smell of body odour. Most antiperspirants work by blocking the sweat glands so that they lose their natural ability to excrete sweat for a period of time. Natural deodorants such as our Salt of the Earth range do not stop the process of sweating, but instead focus on the prevention of bacterial build up on the skin that leads to body odour.
Physical sweating is used by the body to regulate temperature, cooling the body down when it gets over heated. Emotional sweat is triggered by emotional stimuli, mainly stress and fear. It is generally agreed that emotional sweat is confined to the armpits, forehead, soles of feet and the palm of the hands whereas physical sweating happens over most of the body.
Perspiration is odourless when it leaves the body. Body odour is caused by bacteria on the skin feeding on perspiration and breaking it down into chemicals that have odour. Although natural deodorants do not prevent sweating they do prevent the build-up of bacteria on the skin and are therefore an effective body odour remedy.
Our deodorant crystals work because they are water soluble, but too much water can wear them down and prematurely age them. To make them look younger for longer just keep them as dry as possible, no need for expensive anti-aging creams here. Our two top tips are:
Dry the deo crystal after use: Dry the deodorant crystal after use with a towel, cloth or tissue. This stops water dissolving the rock deodorant while you are not using the product and will help to make it last much longer.
Don’t get it too wet: If you are like me and turn your tap on full and hold the deodorant crystal under it for a good few seconds then your deo crystal will disappear in no time (well a few weeks). However if you use your rock on wet skin after a bath or shower or just wet the tip of the crystal under the tap, your natural deodorant will last much longer – possibly even years!
Do both of these things and your crystal deodorant will last much longer than you expect...
So you have finished with your crystal deo, but there is a little left in the bottom.....what do you do? Well you could make an unscented or scented natural deodorant spray. If you have a pump spray bottle handy, a heat proof container a kettle and some water; you are ready to go. If you would like a scented natural deodorant get ready to add a few aromatherapy oils to your natural spray deodorant.
Step 1: Dissolve the deo crystal
Remove the leftover crystal deo from its packaging and put it into a container able to withstand boiling or very hot water (not aluminium).
Step 2: Stir it up
Boil your kettle and let it stand for two minutes. Then pour 100ml of water onto the Alum. Stir gently for 5 minutes, cover and leave for an hour.
Step 3: Let the natural deodorant solution cool and stir again
After an hour stir again for 5 minutes. Most of the alum should have dissolved.
Step 4: Transfer into spray bottle
Pour into the spray pot and wait until it has fully cooled before first use.
Step 5: Add aromatherapy oils to your new natural deodorant spray
Choose which aromatherapy oils you would like to use and put 20 drops into the bottle, after it has cooled. The oil will sit on the top of the water, so you will need to shake it before use.
Now you have a homemade natural deodorant spray but be sure to use this natural spray deodorant within a month as without proper processing it will not last as long as a Salt of the Earth Spray. Watch out where you make the spray too, because the stones can mark some house hold surfaces, particularly granite and marble.
Women smell of Roses...actually its onions!If you’ve ever questioned the common wisdom that men are the smellier sex then you have just been proven right. Many men have thought it, many more women have denied it and now the Swiss have proven it. In a study undertaken by Swiss company Firmenich Scientists, woman’s sweat was judged worse than men’s in a blind test (you’ve got to feel sorry for the people smelling all that B.O.). Women’s sweat was said to smell of onions or grapefruit, while men’s smelt of cheese. If you would like to avoid smelling of onions or cheese, try using one of our natural deodorants.
A scientific study carried out at the University of California has suggested that components in men’s sweat can stimulate ovulation and areas in a woman's brain that improve mood and boost sexual arousal. We do think however, that bad body odour would have quite the opposite effect!! Might be wise to keep your travel crystal deo handy…just in case.
Could body odour be the secret behind our rise to the top of the food chain?Anthropologist Louis Leakey, thinks body odour might be responsible for the survival of early humans. His theory claims that most predators avoided chewing on humans because our body odour was "too repugnant." So if you ever plan on being face to face with a tiger try and remember to leave your Salt of the Earth deodorant crystal at home.
You are unique!Everyone has a unique body odour smell. So much so that some scientists are turning to body odour as a new way to track and identify terrorists and criminals. Your own odour type is genetically determined and although diet can affect your odour it does not affect your odour type.
Oh that's the problem...The Roman poet Ovid had a rather different approach to body odour prevention. In Book III of the Art of Love, he warns women against carrying goats under their arms. Err….thanks for the tip Ovid but I’ll be using my Salt of the Earth natural deodorant too, just to be sure.

A little history about deodorantsDeodorants were originally invented by the Ancient Egyptians. Back then they would use scents such as cinnamon to cover up their underarm odour and have scented baths to keep them fresh.
The first commercial deodorant was called Mum and was cream, it was launched in 1888. Twelve years later the first antiperspirant, Everdry, was launched, and was so acidic it stung the skin and ate through clothing.

Geoff and his girlfriend walk into a chemist and after a few minutes looking for his favourite deodorant Geoff decided to ask the pharmacist for some help. ‘I would like some bottom deodorant please’ Geoff tells him. The pharmacist, a little confused, explains to Geoff that they don't sell anything called bottom deodorant, and never have. Unfazed, Geoff assures him that he regularly buys the deodorant from this store and would like some more. "I'm sorry," says the pharmacist, "we don't have any."
"But I always get it here," says Geoff.
"Do you have the container it comes in?"
"Yes!" says Geoff, "I will go and get it."
He returns with the container and hands it to the pharmacist, who examines it closely and says to him, "This is just a normal stick of underarm deodorant."
Annoyed Geoff snatches the container back and reads out loud from the container: "To apply, push up bottom."
Soon after Jenny and Dave got married, Jenny went to the chemist to look for men's toiletries. A sales assistant comes up to help her and asks if she needs some help.
"I'm looking for some natural deodorant for my new husband Dave, but I don't know what type he uses."
The assistant says, "Is it the ball type?"
"No," says Jenny, it's for his underarms."

Meet our resident Natural Deodorant Family; The Salts. There’s drama brewing as daughter Krystie dates a non-natural deodorant.
"You're not going out with him." Rocky Salt shook with emotion.
"But, Da–ad – "
"I mean it, Krystie. Don't rub me up the wrong way on this, or you'll be grounded."
"Your father's right," gushed Beth Salt.
There’s a Christmas surprise in store for Krystie and her brother Chuck.
“I’m left on the shelf,” sobbed Krystie. “I just don’t get taken out. AND it’s nearly Christmas!”
“Oh, come on, now,” chivvied her mother. “Look at you. You’re slim, you’re attractive –“ “But I don’t get to wear the stuff that the other deodorants do.”
“You want to dress trashy?” interjected her father, Rocky. “You want to look cheap and smell cheap, like all the rest?”
Krystie and Chuck argue whilst on holiday in the Alps, but everything changes when a stranger appears and takes Krystie away.
“Weeeeeeee!” cried Krystie, as she flew down her first black run – in the pocket of her owner’s ski jacket. “I love the mountain air,” she thought. “And they take me out at lunchtime for a bit of refreshment, and I’m definitely needed before the après ski. This is the life!”
Meanwhile, back in the chalet bathroom, Chuck seethed. “Why does she get all the fun, and I’m left here? This skiing business just isn’t a level playing field.”
Chuck goes to great lengths to rescue his sister, but his plan suddenly backfires and he finds himself in a bit of a predicament.
Chuck was aghast to see his sister thrown into the depths of the Frenchman’s man-bag. He suddenly realised how much he missed her.
Although she was a spray, and he was a block, she was still a Salt, and he was determined to keep the family together. But how?
