Natural Beauty in the Cold Season

In this blog, Cassie discusses how best to keep skin looking dewy and fresh in the cold winds and weathers of the Winter and Spring seasons.

 

The Winter and Spring seasons require a particular focus and attention on your body's beauty needs, with the cold, harsh weather proving particularly drying on skin and lips.  Give your body a gift this year, by beautifying from head-to-toe - the natural way!

1. Moisturize


One of the biggest drawbacks of the holiday season is how drying it is for the skin - especially the hands, cheeks, and neck, all areas exposed to the cold! It’s important to keep these places soft and moisturized, and there are several home remedies to try. One of the most effective methods is to whip up an Avocado Buttermilk Honey Smoothie. Simply take a half of an avocado, ⅓ cup of cold (think almost icy!) buttermilk, several tbsp of honey, and blend it together. This will create a slightly gooey paste, so do this over a wash basin or in the tub before you take a shower.

Apply the mixture to the face, hands, neck, and any area that is dry or chapped (people find this works great on knees and elbows, too!)

Leave it on for five to ten minutes, depending on the severity of the dryness. Wash off with warm water. Lotion afterwards.

2. Protect Your Hair


Like your skin, hair is prone to drying in a cold climate. This means you have to work doubly hard to keep it shiny, soft, and nourished. A great way to do this is to cut back on the washes - if you can go one to two days between shampoos, your hair will hold in more natural oils. You should also invest in paraben-free shampoos and conditioners, so that when you do wash it, it won’t be as toxic as regular shampoos.

If you DO need to wash every day, there are shampoos out there to support you. Take Crystal Spring’s Natural Zing: Natural Shampoo. With organic essential oils and detergent-free cleansing materials, this is a shampoo you can use daily without stripping your hair.

3. Smack Your Lips Smooth


Lips get the worst treatment in cold weather. They chap, chafe, and peel. To combat these issues, you need to do two things: exfoliate, and moisturize. To help the peeling of dead skin, exfoliate with several tbsp of sugar mixed with a few tbsp of honey. Gently scrub your lips once a day with the concoction, sloughing off the dead skin gently. Afterwards, apply a paste made from rose petals soaked in milk that have been mashed into a cream. Leave it on for ten minutes, then wash in warm water. You can do this daily.

4. Don’t Get Dried Out


Let’s face it: we all get dry skin during the winter. It’s inevitable. However ladies, there is something we can do about it. 5. Blush Against The Cold


One of the most striking looks against a white, snowy canvasses is the perfect pink cheek. Blush is the star of the winter makeup look - and you can make your own natural kind with only a few spices - and you can customize it to your liking!

You’ll need arrowroot powder, hibiscus powder, and cinnamon. Play with the colours until you find one that matches your tone (hint: for fair skin, opt for pinks and peaches; for medium, opt for more rosy pink and peach hues; for darker skin, use oranges and rose colours.)

6. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!


Winter is hugely dehydrating. Experts suggest you drink even more water than usual during this time of year than the warmer seasons. They suggest following the 8-cups-a-day rule of thumb, unless you’re even slightly active. Then, you should add another two cups to your daily intake.

To make it easier to remember, purchase a 16 ounce water bottle with your own water keychain. This can be four or five different keychain clips of different colours, all linked together, attached at the water bottle’s lid. Once you’ve finished the first bottle, unclip the keychain and clip it back on at the second link. Repeat for the third, fourth, (and if called for) fifth bottle. That way you won’t lose track.

Winter and Spring are seasons that we all look forward to, with Spring in particular bringing rebirth and new life. But we cannot forget to take care of ourselves whilst we are outside enjoying the cold, bright weather, and these natural remedies present the best way to protect our skin.
